Grammy awards: The winners are ...

Soul singer Sam Smith took home the first of the major awards at the 57th Grammys after beating Iggy Azalea, Bastille, Brandy Clark and Haim. Hertfordshire-born Smith, 22, won best new artist, following their phenomenal success with hits like 'Stay With Me', 'I'm Not the Only One' and 'Money on My Mind' last evening at LA's Staples Center.

He also bagged best pop vocal album award for The Lonely Hour, a vast hit across the world following its release in May.

Thank you all for the best night of my life. Before I made this record I was doing everything to try and get my music heard. I tried to lose weight and I was making awful music.

It was only until I started to be myself that the music started to flow and people started to listen, Smith said after receiving the award.

The singer was nominated for six honours -- album of the year, record of the year, song of the year, best new artist, best pop vocal album and best pop solo performance.

Grammy 2015 kicked off with AC/DC set the Grammy Awards on their own 'Highway to Hell' with their explosive opening performance, starting as LL Cool J introduced them.
